Gerry's Hostel is in a fabulous location for the outdoor enthusiast offering excellent walking, climbing, fishing, cycling and golfing. For the mountaineer there are 20 peaks over 2500 ft. The local area is also rich in geology, botany and ornithology and has a great array of wildlife.
The hostel's location is ideal for the Cape Wrath Trail and TGO Challenge Route and links with the Old Drove Road from Dundonnell to Pitlochryis. Also plenty of private car parking Gerry's Hostel is the oldest independent hostel in Scotland. It was originally built as two semi-detached cottages to house rail workers and their families when the West Coast Railway was created.
The railway line is on one side of the hostel, the road on the other. Achnashellach is remote and quiet and open all the year round.
Inside is warm and comfortable with accommodation for 20; two family rooms sleeping 5 in each (with a double and 3 singles), main dorm sleeping 10 in double bunks, also twin and double rooms available, with linen. Gerry Howkins died in February 2015 Gerry established the first Independent Hostel in Scotland and was a founder member of SIH. He was a true independent character and will be sadly missed.
Well-equipped hostel facilities in Achnashellach Gerry's Hostel has a well equipped kitchen, a small food store and excellent drying room, two hot showers, all bedding provided.
Common room with library and roasting log fire, offers cottage comforts such as toasting toes and bread whilst reading a good book and enjoying one's own liquid refreshment.
Excellent location for long distance routes. The hostel is ideally situation on the Cape Wrath Trail and T.G.O. Challenge Route linking two sections of the Old Drove Road (from Dundonnell in the north-west Highlands to Pitlochry in the south-east) at Craig level crossing.
Location: Craig is on the A890 midway between Achnasheen and Lochcarron. 4 km east of Achnashellach railway station.
