The Gearrannan Hostel (Taigh Dhonnchaidh) is situated in the restored blackhousevillage of Gearrannan in Carloway, Isle of Lewis,Outer Hebrides. It is newly restored, with all modern facilities. It offers accommodation for 10 guests, plus a family room for 3 guests. Set in a picturesque location, Taigh Dhonnchaidh is a unique hostel that offers budget accommodation for backpackers, walkers, cyclists, outdoor enthusiasts and students. A crofting history You will be staying in a village which is alive with history. The blackhouses have seen the cycle of life through generations and were occupied by crofting families until the early 1970s. The double drystone walls, the low profile and the insulating thatch made the houses suitable for the Hebridean weather, and they are eco-friendly houses in that all the building materials were natural and found locally. It is easy to imagine that you have stepped back in time to experience the way of life in a typical crofting township of the last century. You can see traditional activities, including the weaving of the famous Harris Tweed. There is a small shop where you can buy mementoes of your visit, and you can relax in the cafeteria where you can enjoy the best of home-made fare.
